Malayalam Thriller OTT Debut: Brilliant or Boring?

Ronth on OTT

The Malayalam thriller Ronth, from the team of the critically acclaimed Nayattu, created a solid buzz on social media ahead of its release.

Given Nayattu’s wide resonance across languages and its Telugu remake, expectations for Ronth were naturally high. Upon its theatrical release, the film received decent reviews and was considered a moderate box office success.

As Ronth arrived on OTT platforms, anticipation spiked — especially among non-Malayalam-speaking audiences who had been waiting to watch it with subtitles or the dubbed versions.

However, the digital reception has been mixed. While many appreciated the performances and technical finesse, others found the narrative too slow and emotionally disconnected.

The plot centers around two police officers and a series of mysterious events that unfold during a single night of patrolling.

Performances, particularly by Dileesh Pothan, have drawn praise, with Roshan Mathew’s brooding presence, the atmospheric sound design, and striking visuals also standing out.

Several viewers singled out the final 20 minutes for being tense and impactful. Yet, the film’s boring pace and minimalistic storytelling alienated some who were expecting a more gripping thriller.

Social media reactions span the spectrum — from calling it a “quietly brilliant” piece of writing to labeling it “boring” and “overhyped.”

Some felt the film began with promise but fizzled out toward the end, especially the climax, which didn’t meet their expectations.

That said, Ronth has found its niche among fans of slow-burn dramas. Some cinephiles, in particular, have compared it to films like Nayattu, Kishkindha Kandam, and Ela Veezha Poonchira, recommending it to those who appreciate mood-heavy storytelling and restrained suspense.
