In a strategic move to capitalize on its existing intellectual properties (IP), Netflix is set to venture into the realm of spinoffs, with two popular titles at the forefront of this expansion— “Extraction” and “Peaky Blinders.”
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Netflix aims to follow the industry trend of transforming successful films and TV shows into larger franchises. “Wednesday,” the streaming giant’s record-breaking series, is already in line for multiple spinoffs, including one centered around Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester.
For the action-packed “Extraction” franchise, Netflix plans to dive deeper into Chris Hemsworth’s world, with a new TV show in development. While details about the series remain under wraps, the events of “Extraction 2” have paved the way for diverse storytelling possibilities, potentially involving Idris Elba’s character.
Meanwhile, “Peaky Blinders,” a critically acclaimed series, is not just getting one but two spinoffs. One spinoff is set to focus on Polly, portrayed by the late Helen McCrory, the matriarch of the Shelby family. The other series is slated to unfold in Boston during the mid-20th century, decades after the original “Peaky Blinders.”
Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction” isn’t just limited to the small screen; a third movie is already in the works with director Sam Hargrave. Hemsworth himself confirmed the news during Netflix’s TUDUM event, expressing gratitude to fans for their unwavering support and hinting at the future adventures of Tyler Rake.
“I want to thank all of you sincerely from the bottom of my heart, the fans and the support for the first film. We wouldn’t be here without you. So thank you, thank you so much,” said Hemsworth at TUDUM. “I know we’ve only just released ‘Extraction 2,’ but is anyone interested in seeing more of Tyler Rake in the future? Well, guess what, because between us, between us friends, we’re already talking about ‘Extraction 3’ thanks to the response.”
With these ambitious plans, Netflix is poised to strengthen its position in the competitive streaming landscape by expanding beloved universes and delivering more content to its global audience.
