Aamir Khan recently addressed the gap between the release of a film in theatres and on OTT, as he appeared at the Waves Summit.
The superstar claimed that the situation is very different now, where the eight-week window is impacting the business of a film.

Aamir recalled that there was a time when films arrived on satellite channels almost a year after, and then the gap was eventually reduced to eight months at one point.
He referred to the same by saying that the eight-week window is simply telling the audience not to come to the theatres.

Aamir also mentioned that the ongoing issue is not about good or bad films, adding that it is the business model that should undergo a change as it is faulty.
Aamir Khan isn’t wrong in suggesting that exhibitors could refuse to screen films that drop too soon on OTT. In theory, it makes sense. But practically, that ship has sailed.

The harsh reality, however, is that the audiences today have changed. Aamir Khan must understand that makers or actors can’t drag audience to theatres just by enforcing rules. Unless the content truly excites them, they’d rather wait and watch it comfortably at home.
Theatres are no longer the first choice — they’re an option only when a film creates real buzz.
Let’s face it — people know the kind of films being made today. That’s one reason they hesitate to buy tickets. Viewers will only queue up when the content feels worth it.
So, instead of trying to bend audience behavior, its time filmmakers step up. Better writing, stronger stories, and genuinely engaging cinema are the only way to win back the crowd.
