The lines between OTT and theatrical releases are blurring. Films would traditionally debut in theatres and hit streaming platforms months later.
But the trend is reversing—movies made for OTT are now finding their way into cinemas, sometimes long after their digital release.
A recent example is Akshaye Khanna’s 2021 film State of Siege: Temple Attack.
Initially released on OTT, it’s now being re-released in theatres with a new name: Akshardham: Operation Vajra Shakti.
This isn’t new, Manoj Bajpayee’s Banda did the same after streaming success on Zee5, though its theatrical run didn’t translate into box office numbers.
The timing of this new release seems deliberate. With national sentiment running high after Operation Sindoor, the film’s patriotic theme might resonate more with the audience.
Filmmakers are trying to cash in on the current mood and draw in viewers with stories of courage and national pride.
But there’s no guarantee an OTT film will work in theatres. Much of the target audience might have already seen it and a re-release might not add enough novelty.
The cinematic experience alone doesn’t justify a second watch.
Still, this is an experiment. Whether this OTT-to-theatre trend takes off depends on how these releases do.
Akshardham: Operation Vajra Shakti is a test case. For now, it’s an interesting move, not a sure shot.
