Ramayana’s Disastrous Strategy? Chasing Wrong Audience?

Ramayana promotional strategy debate

Ramayana is all set to arrive in Diwali 2026. The trailer has created a lot of buzz despite the fact that the reactions to the content have been divided.

While the film is in the headlines, a new topic related to the interest of the Western audience in the film has now emerged. Notably, this is linked to the promotional strategies of the makers before the trailer was released, where they preferred to show the assets to the international audience instead of the Indian audience.

As of now, it has been confirmed that a majority of the revenue for the Indian films shown outside comes from the NRIs who visit the theatres. But the local audience cannot be expected to watch the film, specifically a religious epic, considering that they are not so familiar with the story.

Trade experts stated that although this is a good strategy to make the film visible to the entire world, it also ignores the general path that can be taken for global recognition. They even pointed out that although Ranbir Kapoor and Yash are superstars, they don’t have the Hollywood brand recognition that can attract international audiences to the big screen.

The strategy is expected to work for films that are reimagined and made with a lot of freedom. But the same cannot be done for Ramayana. This is because it is the story of India and linked to the culture of the country, which means any kind of compromise will hurt the sentiments of the audience.

Netizens reacted on social media by saying that irrespective of the response that has been received by the trailer so far, the makers should now focus on impressing the Indian audience. Some even said with confidence that if the promotions are targeted at the Indians, there is a possibility that the recovery of Rs. 4,000 crores will be possible in India without the need for overseas collections.

With a few more months left, let’s wait and see if the makers will continue to prefer impressing international audiences or if they will listen to the feedback of the audience.
