In a recent interview, Genelia opened up about how the film industry responded positively to the announcement of her casting. However, she also criticised Bollywood for not offering her enough opportunities after her marriage.

She said that when people found out she was doing Sitaare Zameen Par, everyone congratulated her and was genuinely happy to see her in an Aamir Khan film.

But what struck her was that some of the very filmmakers who praised her now were the ones who hadn’t offered her roles earlier, simply because she was married.

She spoke about how, according to common industry norms, unmarried actresses are often prioritised for roles, while married women are rarely the first choice.

Speaking about the evolving nature of the industry, she said our mindset should change with the times. She emphasised the importance of casting actors who are the right age for a role, as they bring more depth and authenticity to the character compared to a younger actor trying to portray an older life experience.

Genelia stressed that casting is crucial and expressed hope that actors, regardless of their age or marital status, are given equal opportunities in the industry.

In Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh play characters in their early 40s. Although Aamir is 60, he has addressed concerns about the age difference, pointing out that modern technology and evolving audience attitudes are changing how age gaps in casting are perceived in cinema.

The issue of age disparity is frequently seen in Bollywood, where older male actors are often paired with much younger actresses. Critics argue that the industry must become more inclusive and stop discarding actresses once their youthful years are behind them.
