Vivek Agnihotri, the filmmaker behind The Tashkent Files, The Kashmir Files, and The Bengal Files, has revealed his next ambitious project. He announced plans to adapt the Indian epic Mahabharata for the big screen.
The announcement came during promotions of The Bengal Files. While the news has drawn attention, it has also sparked skepticism. Many critics argue that Agnihotri’s earlier films leaned towards propaganda rather than balanced storytelling.
Vivek has stated that this Mahabharata adaptation will not be a simple retelling. Instead, he intends to present it as a deep and immersive cinematic experience supported by extensive research. He believes the project fits into his larger vision of exploring India’s cultural and historical narratives.
According to Vivek, the film will continue his effort to understand mythology and identity in Indian society. He views it as an extension of themes he has touched upon in his previous works.
Critics, however, remain doubtful. They point to past controversies, accusing him of manipulating history and pushing certain agendas. This raises concerns about his ability to handle a complex story like the Mahabharata with sensitivity and balance.
Despite criticism, Vivek has expressed openness to collaboration. He mentioned that he would welcome working with filmmaker Karan Johar if their creative visions aligned. He also said he would accept Johar’s support as producer if offered.
Reports from the industry suggest that the film will be based on SL Bhyrappa’s acclaimed novel Parva. Vivek has already acquired the rights for adaptation.
Pallavi Joshi, Vivek’s wife, will serve as producer of the film franchise. Meanwhile, noted writer and director Prakash Belawadi is currently working on the screenplay.
