Will The Cult Classic Finally Get Its Due?

Lootera Movie Re-Release

Following the trend of re-releases, Vikramaditya Motwane’s period drama Lootera is about to hit the big screens next month!

Starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, the film was a flop when it was released in 2013. However, over the years, the film has gotten a cult following.

Nearly 12 years after its original release, the film is scheduled to hit the theatres on March 7, 2025.

On February 19, PVR Cinemas announced the re-release via social media by sharing a poster of the film and its release date.

“It’s time, everyone! Experience the magic of Lootera once again on the big screen, starting March 7. Re-releasing at PVR INOX on March 7!,” the post was captioned.

Lootera is partially inspired by O. Henry’s 1907 short tale, The Last Leaf. This was the second film of the director’s career after highly-praised, Udaan that was released in 2010.

Over the last decade, the film has carved out for itself a niche audience.

But will it be able to draw in a big audience like the previous re-releases?

Taking the example of the recent re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam, which was a massive hit at the theatres, the film had a wider audience and was loved by the masses.

But Lootera is a period drama set in the 1950s against the backdrop of the Zamindari Abolition Act. It isn’t everyone’s preferred genre.

After doing successful projects like Black Warrant, CTRL, Jubilee and Sacred Games, the director has made his presence stronger in the industry.

It is highly possible that his name attracts new audiences who are yet to discover the under-appreciated films of the director.

The true impact of Lootera can only be calculated once it hits the theatres once again.
