After Flower Moons, Another Movie On Summer Moons

Renowned filmmaker Taylor Sheridan is set to helm a new project that delves into the complex history of the American West. Sheridan, known for his success with both television and feature films, is set to direct and write the adaptation of S.C. Gwynne’s book, “Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History.”

This gripping narrative explores the four-decade struggle between the Comanche tribe and white settlers for control over the vast landscapes of the American West. The central focus is on Quanah Parker, often regarded as the tribe’s greatest chief. The format of the project, whether it will be a feature film or a television series, remains undisclosed as of now.

Sheridan’s extensive experience in the television industry, with successful shows like “Yellowstone,” and “Mayor of Kingstown,” makes the possibility of a television adaptation intriguing. However, his recent feature film success with the 2021 thriller “Those Who Wish Me Dead” showcases his versatility.

S.C. Gwynne, the author of the source material, expressed confidence in Sheridan’s ability to bring this historical saga to life. “I can’t think of anyone better qualified to bring Empire of the Summer Moon to the screen than Taylor Sheridan,” Gwynne said. “He has a deep and nuanced understanding of both the myth and reality of the old West. I am thrilled that he is undertaking this project.”

Sheridan’s connection to the story goes beyond filmmaking. The sprawling ranch, 6666, owned by Sheridan and his partners, has a historical tie to Quanah. Legend has it that Quanah guided the ranch’s original founder, Samuel “Burk” Burnett, on where to build. The ranch remains a testament to the intertwining of history and folklore.

As Sheridan navigates the final season of “Yellowstone” and plans for its modern-day spin-off with Matthew McConaughey, he simultaneously works on other projects like the second season of “1923,” a prequel series starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
