During the CinemaCon 2026 event in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. surprised everyone by announcing the first ever Game of Thrones theatrical film. The movie is titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, and it is set to be a massive cinematic event.
This project will take fans back to the very beginning of the Targaryen dynasty. The story follows Aegon I Targaryen, famously known as Aegon the Conqueror. Along with his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, he uses his massive dragons to unite the Seven Kingdoms under one crown. This is the era when the Iron Throne was first forged from the swords of defeated enemies.
The movie is based on George R. R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood, which chronicles the rise of the dragon riders. The script is being written by Beau Willimon who also worked on House of Cards and the Star Wars series Andor. His involvement suggests that the movie will be full of political tension and intense drama. Although the film is in early development, Warner Bros. listed it as part of their “2027 and beyond” schedule.
Game of Thrones series has a huge fan base so it would be right to say that the movie can do wonders at the box office. If the movie delivers the “political chess” and “dragon fire” that made the early seasons of Game of Thrones a rage, it is almost guaranteed to be a hit. It is the first time this universe is going to the big screen, and the FOMO factor alone should drive huge opening weekend numbers.
