These numbers have been compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and they shed some light on this disturbing practice. Records show that out of the thirty seven thousand rape cases reported in India in 2014, a staggering 86% of them, that is thirty two thousand victims knew their rapists. Of these, over 600 were family members such as grandfather, father, brother and even son. The rest were relatives (2,217), neighbours (8,344), co-workers (618) and other people known to the victims (19,368).
The numbers clearly reflect an alarming trend and experts recommend women to aware of the threat and the government to be more proactive in educating women.
