Rajinikanth’s most anticipated sequel Jailer 2 directed by Nelson Dilipkumar was released in theatres on October 15th and has gone on a rampage at the box office with positive responses from audiences and critics.
Since the announcement, many people expected that Jailer 2 would emerge as the first 1000 crore grosser of Kollywood, considering the sequel hype and the pan Indian casting. However, Jailer 2 was not able to achieve that historic feat and will likely complete its theatrical run near 850 crores.
Even though Jailer 2 did not become the first 1000 crore grosser of Kollywood as expected, it has now emerged as the industry hit of Kollywood and is also the highest-grossing Kollywood film across all territories.
Following its blockbuster theatrical run, Jailer 2 is now all set to stream on Amazon Prime Video with a four week OTT window starting November 12th in five languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. After Jailer 2’s blockbuster success, many people who missed watching it in theatres are now eagerly awaiting its release.
Meanwhile, this OTT release update has sparked a heated discussion on social media regarding whether OTT audiences might term Jailer 2 an overrated film.
This is because, although general audiences celebrated Jailer 2 in theatres with glowing reviews, many critics reviewed it as just an average film with only mass moments and without a proper story.
Consequently, critics are now suggesting that films like Jailer 2 with mass commercial elements work best only in theatres, whereas for OTT audiences, over the top mass sequences without a strong story might feel tiring and make it an average watch.
Also, many blockbuster films that emerged as big theatrical hits ended up receiving an overrated tag and facing trolls after their OTT release. Hence, after the OTT announcement, several Rajinikanth fans themselves fear whether Jailer 2 might receive the overrated tag and become troll material after its digital release.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how Jailer 2 will be received by OTT viewers and whether it emerges as a successful venture on OTT as well upon its release on November 12th.
