Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan has struggled to live up to expectations at the box office despite releasing after he became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Directed by H. Vinoth, the film is an official remake of Bhagavanth Kesari. While it carried enormous hype before release, it has failed to deliver the kind of worldwide box office numbers expected from Vijay‘s final outing as an actor.
Several factors are believed to have affected its performance, including repeated delays, widespread piracy, and overwhelmingly negative word of mouth.
According to reports, director H. Vinoth has confirmed that six deleted scenes from the film will soon be added to the theatrical version. However, the team is yet to announce when the updated cut will begin screening in cinemas. The move has sparked curiosity among fans, who are eager to know what these scenes contain and whether they add anything significant to the story.
At the same time, many are questioning whether adding a few deleted scenes can really change the film’s fortunes.
In recent years, several filmmakers have tried updating their films after opening weekend feedback, but the results have largely been mixed. If the core content fails to connect with audiences, a few additional scenes rarely make a meaningful difference at the box office. Ram Charan’s Peddi is a recent example. Despite the makers adding new scenes after release, very few audiences returned to theatres to watch the updated version.
For Jana Nayagan, the challenge appears much bigger than missing footage. The film has already received some of the weakest reviews of Vijay’s career, making it difficult to reverse public perception.
The updated version may satisfy some fans who are curious to watch the deleted scenes. However, it is unlikely to significantly change the film’s box office trajectory. Once a film develops a strong negative perception, bringing audiences back to theatres becomes an uphill task.
