Legendary director Mani Ratnam would have never imagined in his wildest dream the criticism he has got for Kaatru Velyidai (Cheliyaa in Telugu). Not only is his lead actor thrashed even some of his sequences in the movie have earned him tremendous negativity.

There is one particular scene in the film where the director shows hero escaping from the prison by digging a tunnel. The idea was right, but the execution was amateurish to put it politely. Instead of accepting what he had shot could have been better, the director tried to avoid it by giving up his source for the scene.
This defense has further worsened the situation as now people are accusing him of plagiarizing content. The case looks unintentionally funny when one thinks about it, but that’s due to the director who chose to respond that way.
