Raaka is already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious films of Allu Arjun’s career. But that ambition could also become its biggest problem. The latest industry rumors suggest that Atlee and Allu Arjun are having a rift over what the film should ultimately be.
Atlee reportedly wants the emotional story to remain the heart of Raaka and make it primarily for Indian audiences. Allu Arjun, on the other hand, is said to be pushing for a more international-looking spectacle, with greater emphasis on world-class VFX and scale.
The difference matters because Raaka is already packed with ambitious elements. The film reportedly has multiple timelines, a huge ensemble, and a triple role for Allu Arjun. The film also features a pregnant Deepika Padukone, Rashmika as her protector, tribal characters, exotic creatures, and massive action sequences. The danger is that all these elements could become more impressive individually than they are together.
Toxic is a recent example of how excessive ambition can backfire. Yash and Geetu Mohandas attempted to create a dark, stylish gangster world with a large cast and huge scale. But the film failed to connect with audiences and became a disaster.
That should be a warning for Raaka.
Allu Arjun is coming off the massive success of Pushpa 2, so expectations are enormous. Atlee’s biggest challenge will be making this huge world simple enough for audiences to understand while keeping them emotionally invested.
There is also a lesson for Allu Arjun from Toxic. Yash’s attempt to build a global image did not even help him strongly in Karnataka, one of his biggest traditional markets.
Raaka can certainly aim for global appeal. But it must first work as a great Indian commercial film.
If the emotion clicks, the scale will be a bonus. If it does not, no amount of VFX, creatures, or international ambition can save it.
