Rashmika Mandanna may be preparing for the biggest acting challenge of her career.
According to the latest industry buzz, Rashmika has emerged as a strong contender to play legendary Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biopic being planned by director Gowtam Tinnanuri who is also looking for a comeback after the Kingdom disaster. Reports suggest the actress recently underwent a look test at her residence. If the casting is finalized, the project could become a massive turning point for Rashmika.
There is no denying that Rashmika is one of the top heroines in the country today as she has been part of massive blockbusters such as Pushpa 2, Animal, and Chhaava in recent years.
However, despite all the success, Rashmika has not yet been recognized as a great performer. While audiences appreciate her screen presence, charm, and commercial appeal, many feel she has not yet delivered a performance that completely silences doubts about her acting range.
That is exactly why the MS Subbulakshmi biopic is generating doubts among audiences and critics.
Playing a legendary personality is completely different from starring in a commercial entertainer. MS Subbulakshmi is not just another historical figure. She remains one of India’s most respected cultural icons, the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna and a global ambassador of Indian classical music. Any actress taking on such a role will face enormous expectations and scrutiny. If not done right, she might become troll material.
While films like The Girlfriend showed some sparks of brilliance of Rashmika as a compelling actor, some feel she still has a lot to prove before carrying a biopic of this magnitude.
At the same time, that skepticism could work in her favor.
Many actors have delivered career-best performances when audiences least expected it. Keerthy Suresh stunned everyone with her portrayal of Savitri in Mahanati when very few expected such a transformative performance from her. She even went on to win the National Award for Best Actress. If Rashmika manages to convincingly portray the grace, dignity, and emotional depth associated with MS Subbulakshmi, the film could completely change the way people view her as an actress.
For now, the project remains at the rumor stage, with no official confirmation from the makers. But if the reports are true, Rashmika may soon find herself facing the biggest test of her career.
Rashmika already has box-office success. What she does not yet have is universal recognition as a great performer. An MS Subbulakshmi biopic could either expose those limitations further or finally prove her detractors wrong.
