Budget overruns have become a common talking point in Tollywood. Especially in the era of big-budget Pan-India films. Ram Gopal Varma, known for his outspoken views has now weighed in on the issue.
According to RGV, Tollywood should work on budget accountability. He believes Bollywood follows a far more disciplined financial system, while Tollywood often allows production costs to spiral beyond original estimates.
RGV has repeatedly argued that Bollywood and Tollywood operate with two very different approaches to budgeting. In his view, a film’s budget in Bollywood is treated as a commitment, whereas in Tollywood it often becomes just an initial estimate.
According to Varma, most Bollywood studio productions work within a structured system. Budgets are finalized before production begins, and any additional expenditure usually requires approval from producers. This corporate culture makes it difficult for projects to spiral out of control financially.
However, Tollywood follows a different model. RGV believes many Telugu films begin production before every creative and technical aspect is completely locked. As the shoot progresses, new action sequences, songs, and schedule extensions are added, which leads to budget overruns.
RGV’s comments raise an important question for the industry. As Pan-India cinema pushes production costs to unprecedented levels, can Tollywood continue relying on flexible budgeting, or is it time to adopt stricter financial accountability similar to large studio systems?
