Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally arrived in theatres, and the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. The Tom Holland-starrer is witnessing packed houses across the country; with many multiplexes reporting houseful shows throughout the day. The film is on course to script history at the Indian box office.
According to early trade estimates, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to collect around Rs. 55-60 crore net on its opening day, surpassing Avengers: Endgame’s long-standing Day 1 record of Rs. 53.50 crore net in India. In gross terms, the film is expected to finish Day 1 at around Rs. 70 crore (USD 7.5 million).
Reviews have been mixed, as audiences say the film has more drama than action, which might disappoint a section of the audience. Even so, trade expects the four-day extended weekend to cross Rs. 200 crore net, with the film projected to finish its lifetime run in the Rs. 350-400 crore net range.
The Hollywood blockbuster has also shaken up the Telugu box office.
Jayakrishna Ghattamaneni’s debut Srinivasa Mangapuram opened to poor reviews. Despite releasing on nearly 800 screens across the Telugu states, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, occupancy remained weak. According to trade estimates, the film collected approximately Rs. 1.5 crore gross till evening. Its Day 1 worldwide gross is expected to end in the Rs. 2 crore range unless the night shows witness a dramatic turnaround.
The situation worsened as several poorly performing shows in the Telugu states were reportedly cancelled and replaced with Spider-Man screenings to meet overwhelming demand. At this stage, only exceptionally strong word of mouth can rescue Srinivasa Mangapuram over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Kiran Abbavaram’s Chennai Love Story has also slowed down because of Spider-Man’s dominance. However, the film has already emerged as a big hit, and trade expects it to regain momentum during its second weekend once the initial Spider-Man wave subsides.
