Director Surender Reddy has been completely off the radar after the disastrous box office result of Akhil’s Agent. The failure hit his credibility hard, pushing him out of top directors’ league. Now, his comeback hinges almost entirely on one project, his upcoming film with Pawan Kalyan.
Though the project is said to be nearly confirmed, fans are not ready to believe it until the shoot actually begins. That is the level of uncertainty surrounding Surender Reddy right now. If it clicks, he can walk straight back into the Tier-1 league. If it fails, it could shut doors permanently.
But here is the interesting twist. While waiting for his comeback, Surender Reddy’s past is roaring back in theatres.
Three of his films are set for re-release in April and May. First up is the blockbuster Race Gurram, re-releasing on April 8 to mark Allu Arjun’s birthday. Next comes Oosaravelli on May 20 on Jr. NTR’s birthday. The film was a flop during its original release, but over time, it gained appreciation for Tarak’s performance, direction, unique story, and music.
Finally, Athidhi will hit screens again on May 29 to celebrate Mahesh Babu. Put together, the entire re-release buzz in the coming weeks is dominated by Surender Reddy’s filmography. And that is exactly the point he needs to understand.
Even today, his films enjoy strong recall and fan following. Kick remains a cult favorite among movie lovers. Athanokkade is still considered the best film in Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s career. Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy may not have been a success, but it was one of the better films of Chiranjeevi after his comeback in 2017.
This track record clearly shows one thing. Surender Reddy knows how to make proper commercial cinema. That is why Agent feels like a massive misfire rather than a true reflection of his potential.
Now, with all his past hits being celebrated again in theatres, the message is loud and clear. The audience has not forgotten him. But they will not forgive another mistake either.
The responsibility is now entirely on Surender Reddy to deliver big time with Pawan Kalyan’s film.
