Suriya’s anticipated film Scene directed by Jithu Madhavan is gearing up for a worldwide theatrical release on November 6th as a Diwali special. With only a few days left until the release, the grand pre-release event of Scene was held recently in Chennai.
During the event, distributor and producer Sakthivelan commented that Suriya is going to deliver 1000 crores at the box office this year, which has now sparked a heated discussion on social media.
So far this year, Suriya has had two releases, which were Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons. While Karuppu has collected more than 300 crores worldwide, Vishwanath and Sons collected around 200 crores and Scene is set to be his third release of the year.
In response to these comments, some Suriya fans believe that what Sakthivelan said will happen and that Suriya will become the first actor in Kollywood to achieve this record. They also believe that with Scene, Suriya will achieve the rare feat of delivering three 200 crore grossers in a single year.
In contrast, some trade experts suggest that if Suriya wants to become the first Kollywood actor to reach 1000 crores at the box office in a single year, Scene must collect more than 450 crores.
Pointing to the release of Ramayana alongside Scene, they feel that Scene will not reach 450 crores and Suriya will not be able to set that record. They also note that Vishwanath and Sons could not match Karuppu’s collections. Hence, they claim that Scene, breaking Karuppu’s record itself, will be tough and Suriya achieving 1000 crores this year is quite impossible.
Nevertheless, Scene currently has strong pre-release buzz and the Government of Tamil Nadu is planning to pass a GO approving 6 AM fan shows and increasing ticket prices to 250 rupees starting with Scene. Therefore, the stage is set for a massive opening and if the content clicks, Scene could do wonders at the box office.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Scene will meet the audience’s expectations and collect more than 450 crores at the box office, helping Suriya secure the record as the first Kollywood actor to reach 1,00 crores in a single year, upon its release on November 6th.
