There was a time when this young producer seemed determined to build a pan-India empire. One after another, he announced ambitious projects with star directors and top actors, aiming for nationwide releases. But according to the latest industry buzz, the situation has changed dramatically.
Several of those ambitious projects are now said to have been either shelved or quietly put on hold. Instead of chasing multiple pan-India films simultaneously, the producer is reportedly becoming far more selective.
The reasons are not difficult to understand.
The OTT market is no longer offering the kind of prices it did a few years ago. Hero market values have become increasingly unpredictable after a string of big-budget failures. Even most-hyped tier-1 star hero films like Peddi and WAR 2 fell flat on pan-India level. At the same time, production costs have skyrocketed, making it much harder to recover investments.
Industry circles also claim that pending payments to technicians and buyers have become another headache for several large-scale productions, adding further pressure on already stretched budgets.
Making a pan-India film today is far riskier than it was during the post-pandemic boom. A few years ago, producers could rely on record OTT deals and strong non-theatrical revenues to cushion the risk. That safety net has weakened considerably.
As a result, many producers are now re-evaluating their strategies instead of blindly chasing scale.
Whether this producer is abandoning his pan-India dream or simply waiting for better market conditions remains to be seen. But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the era of announcing massive projects first and figuring out the finances later appears to be coming to an end.
