Right now, there is a kind of vacuum in Tollywood. The last decently-mounted film with a notable hero was Custody, released last month on May 12.
We have seen films like Anni Manchi Sakunamule, Bichagadu 2, 2018, Malli Pelli, Mem Famous, Men Too, Pareshan, Ahimsa, Nenu Student Sir, Takkar, Unstoppable, and Vimanam, releasing in the last four weeks, but none of them were successful in bringing the audience to the theaters in big numbers.
Only Bichagadu pulled in some mass audience, and 2018 successfully pulled some decent numbers at the box office. Those two films also faded out soon. Mem Famous made more noise off-screen than onscreen, with little impact on the box office.
With no films, theaters are running almost empty as this week’s releases, Takkar, Unstoppable, and Vimanam, also proved to be non-starters at the box office with almost nil collections.
Because of these reasons, there is a vacuum created, and theater owners are also worried about running theaters with no audience. Now all eyes are on this week’s big release Adipurush.
Usually, the box office is at its peak in the summer with many big-ticket star hero films. But this year’s summer has been the worst if we exclude the two COVID years. The distributors and exhibitors are hoping the dry spell at the theaters, which have been sporting a disappointing look for many weeks now, will come to an end with Adipurush’s release.
