South Indian cinema is currently witnessing an interesting phenomena where cinema superstar are finding themselves hardened political careers. First, it was the case of Pawan Kalyan, and now it appears to be the turn of Thalapathi Vijay.
Vijay is contesting the Tamil Nadu assembly election, and the exit polls are suggesting that his party TVK will have a significant role in the outcome.
In case TVK manages to win double digit seats, then this is pretty solid result for Vijay in his first ever election campaign. If he is truly committed to politics, then this is a favourable enough result for him to actually focus on his party and gain foundational strength.
So this would essentially mean that Vijay would move out of the cinema space for good and focus on politics.
This would also mean that Vijay who had been the number one star in Tamil cinema for the last few years would be vacating this position for good. This open up new avenues for other talented youngsters in Tamil cinema.
We have the case of Sivakarthikeyan, who has the potential to reach there, but we have to see if his commercial appeal is as big as Vijay. Pradeep Ranganathan is another whacky youngster who is doing it but the commercial reach is limited.
The best thing about Vijay was not his acting prowess, but the ability to set up right project with right director and deliver quality content. If any other talented youngster can replicate this mechanism, then there is a lot of potential to be met in Tamil cinema.
