granite buddha idol found at amaravathiThe upcoming capital region of Andhra Pradesh is getting more Buddhist connections as the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada (CCV) in a recent survey discovered a granite idol of the Buddha in ‘Bhumisparsa Mudra’, also known as ‘Akshobhya’, at Vaikunthapuram village in Amaravati.

Dhanyakataka, present Amaravathi, was the capital of the Satavahana dynasty that ruled the Deccan from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE. Andhra Pradesh government had decided to name their capital as Amaravati so as to attract Buddhist tourism from across the globe.




The Foundation stone for Amaravati is being planned for Dussehra and the construction works will begin immediately after that. Earlier there were proposals of naming it after TDP Founder NT Rama Rao but Chandrababu avoided it so as to make the place a Buddhist tourism destination by keeping Amaravati as the name.
