Andhra Pradesh could see a major rise in Lok Sabha representation under the Centre’s delimitation and women’s reservation plans. If proposals move ahead, the number of seats may increase from 25 to 38.
Amit Shah has said the expansion will be balanced across states. He clarified that southern states will not lose their share and concerns about regional imbalance are not valid.
The plan includes expanding the Lok Sabha to around 800 plus seats. At the same time, 33 percent reservation for women is expected to be implemented.
Within Andhra Pradesh, population trends indicate where new constituencies may be created. Many current seats have crossed the ideal population limit, making redistribution necessary.
Cities like Vijayawada and Guntur are likely to gain more representation due to rapid growth. The Visakhapatnam region is another strong contender, along with Tirupati and Nellore.
In Rayalaseema, areas around Kurnool and Anantapur may also see new constituencies. These regions have shown steady population increase in recent years.
There is also discussion about a separate Lok Sabha seat for Amaravati. As the capital region grows in importance, a dedicated constituency is seen as a logical move.
The political impact of this expansion will be significant. New seats can help implement women’s reservation without affecting existing constituencies.
At the same time, concerns over North versus South balance have been addressed. The Centre has indicated that the overall share of southern states will remain stable.
However, the process will take time. The delimitation exercise needs legislative approval, and passing the required bill will need wider political support.
The final decision will be taken by the Delimitation Commission. Still, Andhra Pradesh is likely to gain more seats, which could reshape the state’s political map before the 2029 elections.
