Telangana’s Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is poised to unveil a white paper on the state’s power sector following an in-depth review.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the Energy department’s performance, the Chief Minister uncovered crucial statistics. The estimated annual cost of fulfilling the Congress party’s pledge to provide 200 units of free power stands at Rs 4,008 crore.
The power sector’s overall debts amount to Rs 81,000 crore, with Discoms registering losses of Rs 50,000 crore. Monthly payments of Rs 1,300 crore for loan interest and principal were revealed.
Discoms, particularly TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL, are grappling with financial turmoil, accumulating Rs 30,406 crore in short-term loans. Since the state’s inception in 2014-15, these companies have incurred massive losses totaling Rs 50,275 crore.
The agricultural sector, supplied with electricity in two daily 6-hour installments, was also spotlighted in the presentation.
While the idea of free electricity may seem beneficial to the public in the short term, it requires careful consideration of its long-term sustainability.
It would be interesting to see how Revanth Reddy implements this free electricity scheme without burdening the government. With Discoms carrying a debt of thousands of crores, it would be a challenge for the Congress government to provide free electricity of 200 units.
Revanth Reddy must ensure a balanced approach that addresses affordability while promoting energy conservation and sustainability is crucial for devising effective energy policies.
