The Tungabhadra Dam in Hosapete, Karnataka, hosted a significant gathering today for the formal inauguration of its newly installed spillway gates.
The event was jointly attended by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and Karnataka Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar.
The extensive engineering project involved installing 33 new crest gates at a cost of ₹51 crore, following an expert committee’s recommendations after the dam’s 19th gate swept away during the August 2024 floods.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu described irrigation and water projects as the “modern temples” of the nation, emphasising that safeguarding them is vital to securing the future of coming generations.
He reiterated his long-standing commitment to national water management, stating that linking major river systems has always been his ultimate professional goals.
Naidu stated that successfully linking the Ganga and Kaveri rivers stands as his life’s ambition. He noted that achieving this massive country-wide water network would permanently solve regional water scarcity and ensure that India’s growth becomes completely “unstoppable”.
