The State Government had planned to distribute 95 lakh sarees of 80 different varieties at a cost of Rs 280 crore for the Bathukamma festival. The Election Commission had earlier confirmed that the Code of Conduct has come into effect as soon as the Assembly got dissolved. So all the schemes except for the daily administration have to be done only with the permission of the Election Commission.
Bathukamma Sarees distribution created a complete mayhem the last year as women hit the streets burning the sarees complaining that they were give Poor Quality Sarees. Opposition alleged that there is a massive scam involved in this scheme. Telangana Government took the scheme prestigiously this time and wanted to make it a big hit ahead of the elections but the Election Commission applied brakes.
