A goods train hit the Kanchanjunga Express from behind in the Rangapani area in Siliguri, seven kilometers away from the New Jalpaiguri station.

Five people were killed and at least 25 were injured in a train accident that occurred in West Bengal earlier today.

Due to the collision, two bogies of the Kanchanjunga Express were derailed. The 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was going to Sealdah in Kolkata from Agartala.

The goods train completely collapsed due to the collision. One of the derailed bogies of the Kanchanjunga Express was lifted into the air due to the impact.

The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway’s Katihar division stated that the accident occurred around 9 am. Reportedly, the accident happened because the goods train jumped the red signal.

The railway police and the rescue department are conducting the rescue operations.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded to the incident by tweeting, “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.”

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the rescue operations are ongoing. “Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site,” he tweeted.
