Telangana State government is likely to suffer 600 Crore loss due to its decision to reopen Toddy shops in the GHMC limits. Toddy Shops (Kallu Compounds) were banned in 2005 by the then Congress government following complaints against the location of toddy shops in residential areas and the nuisance created by drunken men. TRS put opening of Toddy shops in its election manifesto and subsequently allowed the shops from this Dussehra.
However the excise department of Telangana has estimated that the sale of Toddy will bring down the sale of Indian made foreign liquor, which generates most of the excise revenue in the twin cities. While it is too early to estimate the loss, officials say it will be easily 50 Crore per month. As of now TRS government has given licenses to re-open 108 Toddy shops in GHMC limits.
