In this context, residents of 44 inland Lankan villages in the vicinity of Kolleru Lake are feeling anxious about the potential threat to their villages. Each year, about 10,000 cusecs of floodwater from the upper areas flows into the sea through the Sarkaru Channel via the Saltwater Channel from Kolleru Lake.

However, as part of the railway doubling works, large pillars have been erected in the middle of the Saltwater Channel, obstructing the flow. Additionally, the horseshoe and calf structures in the area have been affected, further hindering the water’s movement.
