The much talked about NRI voting is back in to discussion once again. Up on a petition from an NRI, Supreme Court asked the Election Commission to look in to various option through which NRIs can cast their votes. This kind of voting is prevalent in various countries where people living in other countries are allowed to vote with various options like voting in Embassies, Postal Ballot, Online Voting etc. NRIs do have vote in India but the Election commission insists on physical presence which is becoming a hindrance for NRI participation.
However, the Apex court felt that refusing vote making physical presence mandatory is nothing less than dripriving one of his natural rights of participating in the process of election and urged Election Commission to come up with a method of voting for NRIs. However EC told the court it can not facilitate the process for this election. However Supreme court ordered the Election Commission to interact with embassies abroad and file their response by Friday.
