The national media is abuzz with speculation that major figures could soon join the BJP-led NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu. The rumours began after BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan hinted that a “big name” may come on board, which many believe points to TVK chief Thalapathy Vijay.
Earlier, AIADMK leader E. Palaniswami claimed that the cadre of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) wanted to align with the AIADMK, a BJP ally. With both statements emerging back-to-back, several media outlets now report that Vijay may be preparing for a surprise entry into the NDA fold.
The key question is what will Vijay demand in return? Until now, he has maintained that TVK would contest solo, but the Karur stampede seems to have changed his political calculus. The BJP, sensing an opportunity, is reportedly working to bring him into the alliance.
This raises a bigger question: Will the BJP project Vijay as its Chief Minister candidate?
While E. Palaniswami, a former CM, may seek to lead the alliance, the AIADMK’s current vote share makes that difficult. The BJP, still building its base in Tamil Nadu, may choose to focus on strengthening its presence rather than aiming for the top post.
That leaves Vijay younger than DMK’s Stalin, with a massive fan following and strong mass appeal. These factors work in his favour, but his lack of political experience and the Karur tragedy’s fallout have raised doubts about his readiness to lead.
Politics, however, is far from cinema. Vijay, long used to playing the hero on screen, may now be tempted to play one in real life. If BJP officially welcomes him into the NDA and backs him as CM candidate, Tamil Nadu’s political scene could witness its biggest twist yet. The answer may come in just a few days.
