Elon Musk’s Starlink has officially announced its pricing for India, with monthly plans ranging between Rs. 3,000 to 4,200.

Additionally, the one-time cost of the Starlink satellite dish device is around Rs.33,000. The service will reportedly be available in India within the next two months.

Starlink’s internet service costs 3,000 to 4,200 INR per month. You also need to pay 33,000 INR upfront for the satellite dish. For most middle-class families in India, this is too expensive.

A typical urban family earns 40,000 to 60,000 INR monthly. Spending 3,000 or more on the internet is a big chunk of their budget. Rural families, earning 15,000 to 30,000 INR, find it even harder. They can’t afford to spend so much on the internet alone.

Local options like Jio Fiber or ACT are much cheaper. They offer 100 Mbps plans for 800 to 1,500 INR per month. Installation is often free for quarterly or six-month plans or costs just 2,000 INR.

These plans include unlimited data and free OTT subscriptions like Jio Hotstar and others. This is enough for streaming, video calls, or kids’ online classes. Most middle-class homes want an affordable internet that works well.

They don’t need Starlink’s satellite tech in cities where Jio or Airtel already provide fast internet.

If Starlink is meant for rural areas with no internet then it is also quite meaningless there also at such high rates. The high cost makes it tough to choose.

A rural family might use 4G plans for 200 to 500 INR instead. These are slower but good enough for WhatsApp or YouTube.

The 33,000 INR dish is a huge problem. It’s like buying a new phone or paying school fees for a year.

Families today focus on saving money. The Internet is a must, but it should be cheap. Starlink feels like a luxury, not a need.

If they lower the price to 1,000 INR monthly or offer easy EMIs for the dish, more people might try it. Right now, it’s out of reach for most middle-class homes.
