A recent LocalCircles survey has highlighted a major issue faced by users of taxi apps in India. Eight out of ten people reported encountering manipulative dark patterns and other unfair practices on ride booking platforms.
The survey states that these dark patterns come from deceptive interface designs. They prevent users from making informed choices and often lead to extra costs and dissatisfaction during ride bookings.
The July 2025 survey found that 59 percent of respondents still face unfair trade practices on taxi apps. This continues even though the government has increased regulatory pressure on these services.
Regular users reported several problems. These include unpredictable surge pricing, misleading promotions, unclear fare calculations, and frequent cancellations by drivers who avoid certain destinations.
Many users also struggle to get refunds or proper compensation for cancelled or overpriced rides. This makes the overall experience even more frustrating for customers.
Survey participants pointed out manipulative features such as hidden charges and automatic opt-ins for extra services. They also noted the lack of clear options for complaints or refund requests.
The spread of these dark patterns has increased over time. Ride platforms have not fully addressed earlier concerns raised by consumer groups and watchdogs.
Users and activists are again calling for stronger rules and better enforcement of fair digital practices. As ride hailing continues to shape urban mobility, authorities must ensure ethical systems to protect consumers.
