Lay’s Chips Exposed? India vs the US Truth

Lay’s India vs USA oil comparison

Lay’s potato chips are at the centre of a fresh debate online. A recent comparison by food creator Nalini Unagar highlights a major difference between Lay’s sold in India and the USA.

In the USA, Lay’s chips are promoted as being fried in sunflower oil. However, Lay’s in India list palmolein oil on the packet. This contrast has ignited a conversation about ingredient quality and transparency.

Sunflower oil has relatively lower saturated fat. Palm-based oils contain higher saturated fats that are linked to increased LDL cholesterol and heart disease risk when consumed regularly. For a country already facing lifestyle diseases, this difference has raised concerns.

Many consumers feel multinational brands use healthier ingredients in Western markets and cheaper alternatives in price-sensitive countries like India. This perception has led to anger, disappointment and questions about double standards.

PepsiCo India has started testing a sunflower and palmolein blend as a replacement for pure palm oil. The company claims this will make Lay’s “relatively healthier” without changing the taste or identity of the product.

Whether this becomes the standard formula will depend on consumer pressure. The more Indian customers read labels and demand accountability, the stronger the push for brands to maintain equal standards across all markets.
