Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is all set to take over the Indian box office, with advance bookings pointing towards one of the biggest Hollywood openings of the year. Spider-Man films have always enjoyed tremendous popularity in India, but this time, the response has surprised even trade analysts.
According to industry buzz, premiere shows in major cities, including Hyderabad, are witnessing extraordinary demand. Premium multiplexes are reportedly running houseful, with tickets becoming difficult to secure even through recommendations.
Trade estimates suggest the film could open in the Rs. 65 crore gross range on its first day in India, making it a dominant force at the box office. Its arrival is expected to affect not just films already running successfully but also new releases.
The first film likely to feel the heat is Chennai Love Story. The Kiran Abbavaram starrer has enjoyed a successful opening weekend and is holding well on the strength of positive word of mouth. However, Spider-Man is expected to pull a significant chunk of the urban multiplex audience, particularly in A-centres where Chennai Love Story has been performing well. The romantic drama has already emerged as a success, but sustaining its momentum during the weekdays could become more challenging.
The bigger concern, however, is Srinivasa Mangapuram, which is also releasing on July 30.
The Ajay Bhupathi directorial marks the acting debut of Jayakrishna Ghattamaneni, Mahesh Babu’s nephew and the son of the late Ramesh Babu. For a debut film, opening weekend visibility is extremely important, and going up against a global event film like Spider-Man is far from ideal.
With Spider-Man expected to dominate premium screens and family audiences across multiplexes, Srinivasa Mangapuram will have to rely heavily on strong reviews and positive word of mouth to carve out its own space. The buzz and bookings are low as of now, and strong word of mouth is a must for Srinivsa Mangapuram to survive Spider-Man.
The coming weekend will therefore be interesting on multiple fronts. Can Chennai Love Story continue its successful run despite Marvel’s arrival? More importantly, can Srinivasa Mangapuram overcome the toughest possible competition to give Jayakrishna Ghattamaneni the dream launch he is hoping for?
