‘Bella Ciao’ is an old Italian folk tune with a long history. It was written in the late 1800s as a protest hymn for women laborers in rice fields known as mondina to convey their sufferings. During WWII, the song was adapted and embraced by the anti-fascist Partisan movement in Italy.
