Parents of students from the Witty International School on Shimpoli Road in Borivali East, Mumbai, have been protesting for over a month against a steep increase in school fees. They allege that the hike places an unfair financial burden on families.
The parents claim the revised fees violate Maharashtra government norms designed to keep education affordable. They argue that the increases are arbitrary and lack transparency, leaving families with little clarity on how the new amounts were calculated.
The protest drew wider attention after a video went viral showing parents describing their experience with school authorities. In the clip, parents are seen voicing concerns about both the fee hike and the manner in which staff responded to their complaints.
One mother alleged that a school official, Dr. Sheetal Sharma, made an inappropriate remark to her husband, asking him to earn more and send his wife to handle discussions. The comment triggered anger among parents, who called it disrespectful.
Another parent revealed stark inconsistencies in the revised fees. While one child’s fee increased by 23.77 percent, the sibling’s fee reportedly rose by as much as 92.5 percent, raising questions about fairness and justification.
Distressed parents approached local BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay, who heard their concerns and assured support. He promised to write to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking cancellation of the school’s No Objection Certificate.
Despite repeated appeals, reports suggest the school continues to demand post dated cheques for the 2026-27 academic year. Parents also claim that the management has not attended meetings aimed at resolving the dispute.
The incident has highlighted deeper concerns within the education system. Many parents feel private institutions are prioritising profits over students’ right to accessible and quality education.
Now this is really extreme. Parents are alleging that principal of Witty International School, Brovali, Mumbai is asking them to send their wives to him if they are unable to pay the increased school fees. pic.twitter.com/r5StVI2FDM
