A new case of language conflict has emerged from the city of Bangalore, where natives are referring to Non-kannadigas as beggars.
Despite the vast diversification based on language, religion, and culture, everyone is allowed to go and settle wherever they desire, whether it be India’s economic capital Mumbai or Bangalore, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India. We witness a significant migration of people from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to megacities like Delhi and Mumbai in search of better lifestyles and primarily for job opportunities. Such cities are capable of providing a wide range of job opportunities compared to small towns.
If we think that such cities are doing a favor to the laborers by providing jobs, we are highly mistaken as the cities also need workers in the same way as workers need jobs. This acts as a mutual benefit to both parties. We have seen the cases of factories in Mumbai during lockdown when laborers abandon the city. It made a huge loss to the companies. Factories and mills can’t survive without workers who mostly come from small areas.
Bangalore is notorious for its rickshaw services. Often, we hear about the heavy charges taken by drivers for even short-distance travel. Recently, we saw a picture of an auto-rickshaw in Bangalore with something written that is very wrong and challenges India’s integrity as a nation. If such linguistic conflicts continue, they might lead to another migrant riot, as we have already seen in Mumbai in 2008.
In this case, Bangalore seems to exhibit a toxic attitude toward migrants. The natives do not appear to be welcoming or happy with those who have come seeking job opportunities. A recent picture has been going viral, showing an auto-rickshaw with a hate message directed at migrants. The message says “You are in Karnataka, learn Kannada. Don’t show your attitude you f****r. You come to beg here.”
Different people reacted to it some of them started to troll the person who tweeted, while many of them supported him as migrants are one of the biggest assets why Bangalore is prospering at such a high rate.
Come to Delhi, and don’t speak in Hindi if you don’t know/want, speak in English or sign language or whatever convenient. Nobody will be rude to you for not talking in Hindi. And certainly nobody would tell you that you came to delhi to beg. We know if you came to delhi for work,… pic.twitter.com/G9LuFdTqIk
