With each passing day, online platforms are becoming scarier, as the incidents are not limited to fraud anymore. Cases now involve instances of rape, sexual assaults, and false promises.
A report is emerging from Banjara Hills, where a 35-year-old man allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman he met on the Sharechat app. His torment didn’t stop at physical abuse; he also made marriage promises to the woman but later reneged on them.
Reportedly, the man invited the woman to his room at the Secunderabad Lodge, and they stayed there for several days. During their time together, he raped her and subsequently made assurances of marriage.
After his stay in Secunderabad, he returned to his hometown in Karimnagar. The accused, who had been working as a laborer in Saudi Arabia, withdrew his marriage proposal upon his return to the Middle East.
Following his refusal, the woman visited the Banjara Hills police station and filed a complaint. She also reported that the man started avoiding her, using various excuses that included his mother’s illness.
The recently introduced law in parliament, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023, will help level the playing field for both parties.
