A recent incident at the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has sparked a heated controversy, shining a spotlight on issues of inclusivity and respect on college campuses. According to sources, a student faced humiliation in the hostel canteen for consuming non-vegetarian food.
The incident allegedly took place at hostel 12, where some students had put up exclusionary posters, declaring the space to be “Vegetarian only.” Those who preferred non-vegetarian meals were reportedly coerced into leaving.
The incident has drawn attention from various student collectives, including the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC). They have voiced concerns about the need to create inclusive environments that embrace diversity and respect individual choices.
As educational institutions, IITs are meant to be nurturing spaces that celebrate differences and encourage healthy dialogue. It is essential to address such incidents promptly and encourage constructive conversations to ensure a harmonious and tolerant campus atmosphere.
