Social Media in Shock: Pension for Sex Workers

Belgian sex workers are about to receive pensions and maternity leave. As the country decriminalized sex work in 2022, the Belgian government has since then moved towards bringing sex work under the umbrella of labor laws. The workers will now receive an employment certificate along with the benefits that follow.

The workers will receive full access to social security benefits such as pensions, health insurance, and maternity leave. This makes the workers completely entitled to all the employment rights that were beyond the scope when they operated as self-employed individuals prior to this.

The new laws will mandate the employers to ensure safety measures, including the right to deny service. The employers are supposed to offer social protections alongside other benefits.

The legislation is one of the first of its kind. Overall, it is a victory for sex workers worldwide. Belgium’s approach is now a model to address sex workers’ rights, which negates discrimination and avoids the stigma that remains looming around the profession.

As for India, sex work remains decriminalized. As in the sale of sex among consenting adults is completely legal. However, there is no legal recognition of sex work as a profession. Nor are sex workers granted any sort of rights.

The Belgian model can work wonders in the Indian setting, where sex workers are exploited by social strata and the system. The sex workers can definitely benefit from such a law, but it will be much harder to implement in a country like India.
