The NEET Crackdown: India Imposes Nationwide Block on Telegram

Telegram restriction before NEET

In an unprecedented move to safeguard national examinations, the Government of India has ordered an immediate, temporary restriction on the messaging platform Telegram across the country.

Invoked under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the nationwide block is scheduled to remain in place until June 22, 2026. This timeline covers the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued these directives following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA). This intervention follows failed attempts by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre to halt digital syndicates offering fake test papers.

A major factor in this action is Telegram’s message-editing tool. Scammers have used this feature to edit old posts with real exam questions after the fact, creating a false illusion of a “leak” due to the platform’s preserved timestamps.

To prevent this digital fabrication, the government has imposed a double-barrelled restriction. Alongside the app blackout ending June 22, Telegram must disable its message-editing feature for all existing posts in India until June 30, 2026.

Authorities acknowledge the significant daily inconvenience this causes to millions of citizens. However, they emphasized that the integrity of an exam deciding the future of lakhs of students remains the absolute priority.

The NTA confirmed that no genuine question papers exist outside of secured vaults. The NEET-UG re-examination will proceed precisely as scheduled on June 21, 2026.
