The BCCI is planning a major change to the IPL calendar, with the tournament likely to begin earlier from 2027. The move is aimed at reducing the impact of extreme heat on players and fans during the summer season.
According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, discussions are underway to conduct the IPL from March 10 to May 15 instead of the usual late March to late May schedule. The board believes an earlier start can help avoid intense temperatures and weather-related disruptions later in the season.
Devajit Saikia said players and fans have raised concerns about the harsh weather conditions experienced during matches in several parts of India. The BCCI is now exploring ways to make the tournament more comfortable while keeping the existing structure intact.
The board has no plans to increase the number of matches in the near future. Saikia clarified that the IPL will continue with 74 matches and said expanding the tournament to 94 games is not feasible because of international commitments and the limited window available in the global cricket calendar.
The BCCI is also considering adjustments to the domestic cricket schedule so that all major tournaments conclude by early March. This would allow the IPL to start earlier while maintaining its current format. The proposal is expected to become a major topic of discussion ahead of the IPL’s 20th edition in 2027.
