A few days ago, strong reports suggested that the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) had proposed that top Kollywood stars work on a profit-sharing model. Now, it appears the TFPC is also pushing for new guidelines on OTT release windows for Tamil films.
According to reports, top star films will start streaming on OTT platforms only after 8 weeks. Mid-range films will get a 6-week window, while small-budget films will continue with the usual 4-week release window.
There has been no official confirmation yet. But many trade experts are supporting these proposed rules. They believe the longer gap may help improve theatrical collections for most films.
However, they also warn that leading OTT platforms may reject these terms. Even if they do agree, the OTT rights of top star films will reportedly drop in value because of the extended window.
Experts add that producers of top star films often rely on high OTT rights to stay financially safe, regardless of box office performance. If these amounts fall, it could lead to major losses.
For now, these guidelines have not been formally approved. It remains to be seen whether OTT platforms will accept TFPC’s proposal and whether OTT windows for top star films will be extended in the future.
