In a strange turn of events, a person who allegedly tried to kill his wife and two minor children might walk scot-free.
We reported earlier that Dharmesh Arvin Patel, a 41-year-old California-based doctor, was accused of driving his Tesla off a cliff with his family inside. Fortunately, all survived. Patel’s wife revealed he did it on purpose due to his major depressive disorder. He has since been charged with attempted murder and domestic violence.
A mental health diversion is being pursued, allowing him a two-year treatment plan that could potentially lead to charges being dismissed if successfully completed. The district attorney expresses concern about Patel’s dangerousness and uncertain future in medicine, given his revoked license.
The court has set a hearing for November 1, 2023, to decide if he qualifies for mental health diversion. Prosecutors plan to oppose the request, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime. The decision will have significant implications, and many will be closely watching to see how the legal system handles this sensitive matter.
