A routine trip home turned disastrous for an F-1 student when US immigration officers at Abu Dhabi denied him entry and revoked his visa. The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cancelled it on the spot, leaving him stranded outside the US.
Visa Cancelled Over Missed Classes
According to the student, the CBP officer claimed that his university classes had already begun and that he was not attending them in person. The officer marked him “out of status,” effectively cancelling his student visa immediately.
Student Says Visa Was Valid
The student maintained that his I-20 form was valid and had a travel endorsement from his Designated School Officer (DSO). He had also informed the DSO about his late return, but CBP officers allegedly ignored the documentation and communication.
University Allowed Online Attendance
While the university had approved online participation during his temporary absence, CBP officials refused to consider that. Despite the institution’s support, the officer exercised discretionary power to revoke the visa — a decision within CBP’s legal rights.
Forced to Reapply for New Visa
The cancellation means the student must now apply for a completely new F-1 visa to return to the US. What was meant to be a short visit home has turned into a prolonged and stressful situation lasting months.
Heightened Scrutiny at Ports of Entry
Recent trends show increased scrutiny for international students arriving in the US. Many fear that unpredictable actions from border officers could jeopardise their status, even when their paperwork is in order.
Students Warn Each Other to Be Cautious
The international student community is now advising peers to seek legal guidance before travelling abroad. With changing immigration attitudes, being fully prepared has become essential to avoid similar visa complications.
