Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s dream start to international cricket has surprised many fans, but not VVS Laxman.
The India coach believes the teenager’s performances are the result of years of planning, saying his maturity has improved massively over the last six months.
Laxman revealed that the Indian team had spotted Vaibhav’s talent nearly two and a half years ago during a junior tournament.
Since then, the left hander has been part of several camps at the Centre of Excellence and continued to impress at every level.
His performances in the Under-19 World Cup and the IPL only strengthened the belief that he was ready for international cricket.
VVS Laxman said Vaibhav’s biggest improvement is not just his batting but the way he understands the game.
According to Laxman, the youngster has learned to assess situations better and is always eager to improve. He also praised Vaibhav’s commitment after the batter wanted to continue on the field despite picking up an injury during the Zimbabwe match.
Laxman also pointed to Vaibhav’s 81 against Zimbabwe as an example of his growing maturity. Instead of playing only attacking shots, the 15 year old adjusted to the slow conditions and built his innings according to the situation.
He added that the experience of playing in the IPL has already helped Vaibhav handle pressure at the highest level.
Laxman believes there is still one area where the youngster can improve. He said Vaibhav needs to work on his overall fitness but reminded everyone that he is still only 15 years old.
