A heart-wrenching plea for help has emerged from the Consulate of India in Chicago in response to a distressing case involving a young woman from Hyderabad. Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi, who traveled to the US to pursue her Masters in Information Science, was recently discovered in a dire situation – homeless and seemingly mentally unwell.
The Consulate was made aware of this distressing situation through social worker and MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan, who shared a video highlighting the urgency of the matter and reaching out to Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for assistance.
According to a letter by Syeda Wahaj Fatima, the mother of the young student, they had regular communication with Lulu while she pursued her studies in TRINE University, Detroit. However, contact with her abruptly ceased over the last two months. It was only through the efforts of two compassionate individuals in Hyderabad that the family learned of Lulu’s current location.
Shocking revelations surfaced, revealing that Lulu was battling severe depression, and her belongings had been stolen, leaving her on the verge of starvation while wandering the streets of Chicago.
The Ministry of External Affairs promptly registered the grievance on the Madad portal and forwarded it to the Indian Embassy in Washington and the Consulate in Chicago for necessary action.
It is vital for the global community to recognize and address such challenges faced by students studying abroad and work collectively to ensure their well-being and safety.
